Charging Challenges for Multi-Family Dwellings

By Scott Bradford · February 3, 2023

This article over at smartcitiesdive.com 'dives' into the issue of how to get clean energy vehicle charging installed for apartment dwellers. Suppose you're a homeowner with private off-street parking. In that case, considering where to charge an electric vehicle overnight is an easy-to-solve problem, requiring a very small investment in installing a charger plug near where you park.

For a renter, especially in multi-unit dwellings like apartment complexes, there's a whole host of other issues to contend with. Not already owning an electric vehicle, most renters or homeowners association members wouldn't want to pay a premium to have vehicle charging available. Property owners, faced with an upfront out-of-pocket expense aren't enticed by a loss of profit. Put it to a vote (as most associations would do), and there is no progress.

This is an area where government subsidies to help move things in a positive direction are likely the best way forward. This article does a good job of detailing some of the challenges and how to meet them.
