New York City Vision Zero makes EUCs E-Skateboards Illegal?

By Scott Bradford · January 31, 2023

This chart from the New York City government website appears to outlaw several types of emerging personal mobility vehicles, namely electric skateboards, electric unicycles, hoverboards, and mopeds without VIN numbers.

While it's difficult to define a hard limit on safety, it's important that you allow people the freedom to ride responsibly. We feel that there should be a weight class for personal mobility along with rational speed limits, and after that, it really shouldn't make much difference if you have one, two, three, or four wheels. Just because your car can do 100mph, doesn't mean it's not permitted on neighbood roads. Obviously just because we can speed doesn't mean we will, and this approach should allow for new types of Personal Electric Vehicles.

The chart hints that this weight+ speed limit may be the way forward by mentioning in the E-scooters category that they must weigh less than 100lbs. This only seems fair as you wouldn't want big heavy vehicles intermingled with bike lane traffic.

It's frustrating that so much of our modern world is built around big heavy cars that it is now difficult to bring more personal and environmentally responsible types of transportation into the mix. Regardless of the source of power, how much more power does it take to move a 5,000 lb car than a 50lb Scooter or EUC, 100 times!!!

We at CEVRA are researching laws in hopes of coming up with sensible, enforceable, and fair regulations that be more universally enacted which will help the industry find the way forward when designing new products.
